2015 Week 5 College Baseball Top-25 Rankings (March 9-15)
Despite suffering their first loss of the season, Virginia leads the college baseball top-25 rankings for the fourth consecutive week. For the third straight weekend, Brian O’Connor’s team was forced to move a home series away from Charlottesville, setting the scene for their opening series against a conference opponent,
After Friday’s game was rescheduled as part of a Saturday doubleheader, the Cavaliers were ready to get back to work. Pittsburgh proved to be a formidable foe, winning the lid-lifter, 1-0, but lost the nightcap 2-1. The top-raked Cavaliers found their offensive swagger on Sunday in a 10-3 rout to win the series and stay atop the rankings.
Second-ranked Florida split a mid-week pair of games with #20 Central Florida and swept Maine to stay in Virginia’s rear-view mirror. Third-ranked Texas Christian went 3-1, including a 2-1 record at the Dodgertown Classic, to remain in place. Louisiana State moves up to fourth on the strength of a 5-0 week which included a 3-0 mark at the Houston College Classic.
Texas A&M, who also posted a 3-0 record in Houston as part of a 5-0 Week 4, rounds out the top-five as the only undefeated team in Division-One college baseball. The Aggies’ 16-0 start is the second best in program history, trailing, only, the 1989 squad’s 26-game winning streak that paced then-skipper Mark Johnson’s club to a 58-7 record and a season-ending ranking of #2 despite being upset at the College Station Regional by LSU.
UCLA and Vanderbilt, previously ranked fourth and fifth, recorded 0-3 and 1-2 records at the Dodgertown Classic, respectively, fall out of the top-five while the lone team to leave Chavez Ravine unscathed, Southern California, vaults from #16 to #11.
Five teams drop out of the rankings this week: #17 Houston, #18 Texas, #21 Miami-FL, #23 Mississippi and #25 San Diego State while Oregon State, Florida Atlantic, Dallas Baptist, Arizona and Campbell make their 2015 rankings debut.
