2017 Week 9 College Baseball Top-25

April 10, 2017

RHP Jake Thompson ran his record to 7-0 with a 1.18 ERA for top-ranked Oregon State in Sunday’s 5-1 win over Utah – the Beavers’ school-record 23rd consecutive victory, which tied the PAC-12’s all-time mark. (photo courtesy of Billy Gates/Oregon Live)

Week 8 of the Division-1 College Baseball season became the most turbulent of 2017, as some of the top teams in the Power Five conferences continued, what has been, a roller-coaster schedule of results. While last week’s top-six teams hold the same positions and two top-ten clubs swapped places, the rest of the rankings, barely, resembles last week’s top-25.

Despite being tested by inferior competition to the tune of three one-run games, including a 16-inning affair on Saturday, top-ranked Oregon State extended their school-record winning streak to 23 games with a 4-0 record that was capped by a sweep of Utah. Up next for Pat Casey’s squad: a pesky Gonzaga lineup and a trip to Washington, currently second in the PAC-12.

TCU, holding down the second spot in the rankings, ran their winning streak to 12 with a mid-week win at UT Arlington and a non-conference series sweep of Murray State. The Horned Frogs continue to hold a two game lead over Texas Tech and West Virginia as the mid-point of the Big 12 schedule commences this weekend.

Clemson begins another week at #3 following a shutout win at Georgia and a three-game sweep of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. At 13-2, Monte Lee’s Tigers own the best conference record in the ACC and own a one-game lead over Louisville in the Atlantic Division and host Charleston Southern before heading south to Dick Howser Stadium for a Saturday/Sunday/Monday series against Florida State.

Louisville remains in fourth after a 3-1 week. The Cardinals defeated Kentucky in a mid-week tilt before taking two of three from Wake Forest in a hotly contested series at Patterson Stadium. Fighting for a national seed in, arguably, the toughest conference in the nation, Louisville hosts improved Purdue before traveling to Russ Chandler Stadium to face ACC Coastal cellar dweller Georgia Tech.

North Carolina gives the ACC three teams in the top-five, as a 4-0 week pushed the Tar Heels’ winning streak to eight. Mike Fox’ squad, leading the ACC Coastal Division at 12-3, nipped East Carolina before bludgeoning Boston College in a three-game sweep in Chestnut Hill, MA. Rarely getting a week off from top competition, North Carolina visits South Carolina on Tuesday before hosting Tobacco Road rival North Carolina State.

Sixth-ranked Arizona posted a 3-1 week with an overwhelming win against Arizona State in a mid-week non-conference matchup and winning two of three at Washington State. Despite a 7-5 record in the PAC-12, the 2016 National Runners-Up trail, only, Oregon State in RPI and look to hold that spot this week with a road game at Grand Canyon and a home series vs. Oregon.

Texas Tech moves up one spot to seventh after roughing up WAC leader New Mexico State and fell one run short of sweeping Baylor at Rip Griffin Park. The Red Raiders host Mountain West leader New Mexico this week before trying to hold on to, at least, second place in the Big 12 with a weekend series at conference basement occupant Kansas State.

Oklahoma drops to eighth, switching places with Texas Tech. The Big 12’s third entry into the top-10 opened the week with a win over Summit leader Oral Roberts, but dropped two of three against resurgent Texas on the road. A trip to Tulsa for the back half of a home-and-home with Oral Roberts opens the week and concludes with an inter-sectional matchup at Big Ten RPI leader Michigan.

Virginia makes the biggest leap this week, up ten places, to ninth on the heels of a 5-0 run that pushed the 2015 College World Series champs into second place in the ACC Coastal. Mid-week wins over Old Dominion and George Washington paved the way to the perfect week, which ended with a sweep of Pittsburgh. The Hoos remain in the Commonwealth this week, hosting VCU before taking a bus ride to visit Virginia Tech this weekend.

Rounding out the top-ten is SEC-West co-leader Mississippi State after an up-and-down week. The Bulldogs split a pair with Florida International and lost their series opener with Kentucky before posting identical 10-6 wins to take the series from the Wildcats. 1B Brent Rooker was the story of the weekend, launching three home runs and driving in six in Saturday’s win. The red-shirt junior, in 34 games, is hitting .448 with 15 homers, 56 RBI, slugging 1.008 and has amassed a 1.556 OPS.

Despite dropping two of three at Louisville, Wake Forest surges five spots to 11th, LSU jumps six places to 12th, Long Beach State debuts in 13th, Vanderbilt rejoins the rankings in 14th and West Virginia joins the rankings for the first time in 2017, grabbing 15th place.

South Carolina retreats six notches to 16th, Kentucky falls four to 17th, Houston becomes the second AAC team to enter the 2017 rankings, checking in at #18, Florida drops four places to 19th and, despite a falling RPI based on their conference schedule, Wright State rises one spot to 20th.

Southern Miss falls seven to 21st, McNeese makes their season debut at #22, Missouri State and South Florida, each, move up a notch to 23rd and 24th, respectively, and Cal State Fullerton returns to the top-25 in the final spot.
