Top-ranked TCU leads six ranked teams into Minute Maid Park in Houston for this weekend’s Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic

TCU hangs on to the top spot in this week’s rankings, despite losing a 13-9 slugfest to then 18th-ranked Arizona State in the lid-lifter of the teams’ weekend opener at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth, TX. During a 3-1 week which began with a 7-2 road win over UT Arlington at Clay Gould Ballpark, Luken Baker slugged a pair of home runs and drove in six for the Horned Frogs, who overcame eight errors against the Sun Devils to take the final two games of the series.

After a one-run loss to Jacksonville in their first mid-week contest of 2017, #2 Florida swept #17 Miami-Florida at McKethan Stadium, allowing, only, two runs in the series. While the Gators’ bats were stymied for most of the three-game set, Florida’s starting pitching carried the load, posting a 0.41 ERA in 22 innings, allowing 11 hits and striking out 26 Hurricanes batters. In the 1-0 win on Friday night, Gators’ skipper Kevin O’Sullivan notched his 400th career victory in Gainesville.

Oregon State notched a 4-1 week in Surprise, AZ to remain third in the rankings. The Beavers beat Indiana to wrap up the Sanderson Ford Classic on Monday and, then, took three of four at the Big Ten/PAC-12 Challenge over the weekend. The two-time College World Series champs swept a pair from Nebraska and split two games with Ohio State. Jake Thompson won twice for Oregon State, beating Indiana on Monday and Ohio State on Sunday. Thompson gave up five hits and two runs over 13.1 innings while striking out 15.

Fourth-ranked Louisville remained undefeated with a 4-0 campaign after blasting Eastern Kentucky and sweeping Omaha with ease. 1B/DH Brendan McKay hit .692 (9-for-13) with a homer and five RBI while pitching five innings for the win on Friday over the Mavericks. The Cardinals blanked Omaha over the final two games, allowing six hits and fanning 26.

LSU rounds out the top-five for the second consecutive week following a 4-1 record. The Tigers fell to in-state rival New Orleans 11-8 on Tuesday, but rebounded with an easy win over Hofstra and by crushing Maryland in a three-game sweep. RF Greg Deichmann hit .333 during the week with two home runs, eight RBI and four runs scored. Jared Poche’ was LSU’s pitching star of the week, allowing one hit over eight innings in the Tigers’ 14-0 win on Saturday.

2016 College World Series runner-up Arizona slugged their way to a 5-0 week, nipping Eastern Kentucky 9-8 in a mid-week tilt and battering McNeese State in a four game sweep over the weekend to move up three spots to sixth. CF Jared Oliva went 10-for-21 (.476) at the dish with a pair of homers and nine RBI to lead the Wildcats’ offense while Michael Flynn was a beast out of the bullpen in long relief, allowing four hits and fanning nine in 9.1 scoreless innings, including one hit over six innings to pick up the victory on Friday in a 8-3 win over the Cowboys.

Florida State holds steady in seventh after winning three of their Week 2 contests. The Seminoles fell to South Florida 4-2 on Tuesday, after the bullpen allowed four runs in the top of the ninth to blow a 2-0 lead. Mike Martin’s club rebounded by bludgeoning Samford in a three-game sweep, outscoring the Bulldogs 37-7. Tyler Holton twirled seven innings of two-hit ball and struck out 11 in Saturday’s 8-0 win and RF Rhett Applin posted a .455 mark at the plate (5-for-11) with a homer, five RBI and drawing four walks.

Virginia moves up five spots to 8th after remaining undefeated with a 4-0 campaign. In a 9-7 win over VMI on Tuesday, skipper Brian O’Connor picked up his 600th career victory after his Cavaliers rallied for four runs in the home half of the eighth inning to erase a 7-5 deficit. CF Adam Haseley hit .571 (8-for-14) with two homers and seven RBI for the week while allowing two runs and three hits over seven innings to earn the victory in the Wahoos’ 18-2 win over Rutgers on Sunday, capping a three-game sweep.

Mississippi stayed among the ranks of the undefeated after blasting Arkansas State and sweeping UNC Wilmington at Swayze Field. OF Will Golsan went 4-for-5 with three doubles, two RBI and four runs scored in the Rebels’ 16-4 win over the Red Wolves while David Parkinson, James McArthur and Brady Feigl, each, tossed solid starts to sweep the Seahawks over the weekend. The trio of starters allowed eight hits and three earned runs over 17 innings with 23 strikeouts to vault the Rebels six spots into ninth.

Moving up four spots to round out the top-ten is Texas A&M, who battled to a 3-1 week, which started with a 12-inning, 6-5 win over Stephen F. Austin at Blue Bell Park and finished with a series win over Pepperdine. After staking the Lumberjacks to a 5-0 lead after three innings, the Aggies crawled back to force extra frames and won in the 12th inning as Braden Schumake scored on a wild pitch by Josh Ponder. Despite an 0-for-4 day at the plate in the Aggies’ 2-1 loss on Saturday, Schumake was the Week 2 offensive star for Texas A&M, hitting .474 (9-for-19) with two doubles, a triple, one homer and four RBI. Brig Hill tossed 7.2 innings of shutout ball on Friday, striking out ten for the Aggies’ top individual pitching performance.
