The first full week of FCS action saw few surprises, while three ranked teams knocked off FBS programs.

#2 Richmond defeated Virginia 37-20 as Kyle Lauletta threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns, giving the Spiders their first win over the Cavaliers since 1946 and their fourth win against an FBS squad in their last nine matchups. Brian Brown caught two of Lauletta’s scoring passes while Gordon Collins rushed for 114 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

J’Veyon Browning’s 1-yard touchdown run with 2:49 remaining in regulation lifted fifth-ranked Northern Iowa to a 25-20 win at Iowa State. Panthers dual threat quarterback Aaron Bailey threw for 135 yards, rushed for 114 more and accounted for a pair of touchdowns in the victory. Northern Iowa forced four turnovers, including a pair of late-game interceptions tossed by Iowa State quarterback Joel Lanning, as the Cyclones turned the ball over on their final three possessions.

#17 Eastern Washington, known for scheduling top-flight opponents early in the season, held off Washington State 45-42. Eagles quarterback Gage Gubrud scampered to the end zone from 30 yards out with 1:39 to play to give the visitors a 10-point lead and, despite a late scoring run from the Cougars’ Gerard Wicks, headed home to Cheney with a victory. Gubrud passed for 474 yards and five touchdowns with three off the scoring strikes corralled by Cooper Kupp, who caught 12 passes for 206 yards.

Elsewhere, #9 South Dakota State, #10 William & Mary, #18 Villanova, #20 Towson, #21 Colgate, #22 Eastern Kentucky and #25 Northern Arizona lost to FBS programs. The only ranked team to lose to a fellow FCS club was 15th-ranked North Dakota, who fell at Stony Brook. The loss dropped the Fighting Hawks from the rankings while the Seawolves entered the top-25 at #24.
