Despite losing their first weekend series of 2016, dropping out of the top spot in the RPI rankings and being the #4 seed in this week’s SEC Tournament in Hoover, Alabama, Kevin O’Sullivan’s Florida Gators remain the top-ranked team in this week’s college baseball top-25. Florida heads into the SEC Tournament as the top-ranked team in the nation, even after suffering their only season-series loss of 2016 at LSU. The Gators’ Thursday opener was suspended, due to rain, and, after a Friday loss, the continuation of the lid-lifter resulted in second loss for Kevin O’Sullivan’s club. However, Florida did escape Alex Box Stadium with a seven-inning victory on Saturday and holds on to the pinnacle position.

Texas A&M slipped to a 2-2 week, but remains in second place. The Aggies were handed their first shutout of 2016 by Sam Houston State, but rebounded to take two of three from Ole Miss. Miami was well on their way to a undefeated week, but a Saturday, extra-inning, walk-off home run spoiled the Hurricanes’ plans of sweeping Florida State in Tallahassee. The Canes cemented the third spot with a solid 3-1 campaign. Mississippi State holds firm in fourth after humbling Arkansas to run their winning streak to ten games and grab the SEC regular season title. Despite grabbing the top spot in the RPI rankings, Louisville has to settle for another week in fifth place. The Cardinals blasted Indiana before, easily, dispatching Wake Forest en route to the ACC’s Atlantic Division title.

South Carolina had no problem with The Citadel before sweeping their series at Alabama via a trifecta of two-run victories to lead the second five. LSU jumps into the top-ten, up four spots to seventh, after taking two of three vs. top-ranked Florida and logging a mid-week victory over Northwestern State. In the Big 12, Texas Tech wrapped up their regular season and a conference title with a series win over resurgent West Virginia to stand pat in eighth. Virginia and North Carolina State swapped positions as the Cavaliers continued their late-season charge with an easy series win over hapless Virginia Tech to take ninth while the Wolfpack took two of three against Tobacco Road foe North Carolina to enter the post-season in tenth place. Also, Saturday’s NC State victory, combined with Boston College’s doubleheader sweep of Georgia Tech, leaves the Tar Heels out of the ACC Tournament and they sit as the enigma of the 2016 Field of 64. With the Heels’ RPI good enough to host, but failing to qualify for their own conference’s tournament, what will the committee make of Mike Fox’ team?

Vanderbilt moves up one spot to 11th, Mississippi drops five positions to 12th, TCU remains in 13th, Clemson advances two rungs to 14th and Coastal Carolina surges from 22nd to 15th.

Despite losing two of three to Miami, Florida State inches up one spot to 16th, Louisiana-Lafayette moves up two to 17th, Oklahoma State’s loss to Oral Roberts causes them to fall to 18th, despite a sweep of Kansas, Florida Atlantic returns to the rankings in 19th and Duke advances five spots to 20th.

Rounding out the top-25 this week, East Carolina rises from the unranked to 21st, Tulane drops two spots to 22nd, North Carolina remains in 23rd, UC Santa Barbara climbs to 24th and Georgia Tech, barely, remains in the rankings holding down the 25th position.

Florida Atlantic and East Carolina’s resurgence into the rankings sends Southern Mississippi and Rice, both C-USA teams, to the “also receiving consideration” category. The Golden Eagles were swept at Florida International and the Texas version of the Owls suffered the same fate at Louisiana Tech. Not coincidentally, the series losses by USM and Rice opened the door for Florida Atlantic to grab the Conference USA regular season title, with Marshall taking the two-seed in this week’s conference tourney. Despite losing two of three to Cal State Fullerton last weekend, the UCSB Gauchos knocked the first-place Titans out of the rankings after a 3-1 week while CSF lost a home series to Hawai’i.
