Despite a pair of goals from junior Josh D’Alessio, West Warwick/Exeter/West Greenwich ended Ponaganset’s 124-game league winning streak 4-3.

(Burrillville, RI) Zach Mageira’s tally with with 3:32 remaining in regulation propelled West Warwick/Exeter/West Greenwich Co-op to a 4-3 victory over Ponaganset in Friday night action at Levy Arena, ending the Chieftains’ 14-game league winning streak.

The matchup of the top two teams in Rhode Island Division III hockey was a defensive battle through the first half of the opening period until Ryan Watts beat Jared Olsen 8:54 into the game for his team-leading 19th goal of his freshman season, assisted by his twin brother, Nate Watts, and fellow freshman Drew Briggs. Junior Josh D’Alessio beat Olsen less than a minute later, unassisted, for his 17th tally and a 2-0 lead for the Chieftains (14-1-0, 14-2-0) and capped the scoring for the game’s first 15 minutes.

Nick Pecchia put WW/EWG (12-3-0, 12-3-1) on the board 4:19 into the middle frame with an unassisted tally against Chieftains goalie Curtis Briggs, but D’Alessio pushed Ponaganset’s lead to 3-1, only 19 seconds later, with assists credited to co-captain Nate Morin and Tom Caine. Pecchia struck, again, 28 seconds following D’Alessio’s goal, to cut the hosts’ lead to 3-2, with Dan Skorski registering an assist.

Skorski tied the game with an unassisted goal, 5:29 into the final period and, following defensive brilliance from both squads, Magiera was able slip the game-winner past Briggs at the 11:28 mark to end the Chieftains’ perfect season in Division III.

Briggs, a sophomore, stopped 23 of 27 shots on the evening and, still, boasts a brilliant .941 save percentage on the season in league play. Olsen was outstanding in WW/EWG’s first win over Ponaganset in 2015-2016, denying 39 of 42 Chieftains shots on net.

The Chieftains won the season series, two games to one, outscoring the second-place squad 10-7.

Ponaganset wraps up a three-day/three game stretch, to make up previously postponed games, Saturday night at Cranston Ice Rink to face winless East Providence at 6:30PM ET.
