(Portsmouth, RI)  Goaltender Braedyn DeMarco stopped 17 of 18 shots and freshman twins Ryan and Nate Watts combined for a goal and three assists to lead first-place Ponaganset to a 4-1 victory over Mt. Hope in Rhode Island Division III hockey at Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink on Thursday night.

Jake Lincourt opened the scoring for Ponaganset (14-0-0, 14-1-0) with the eighth goal of his freshman campaign, only 3:24 into the contest, with Ryan Watts tallying an assist. Both defenses held strong through the remainder of the opening period, but the Chieftains struck early in the second stanza as Drew Briggs lit the lamp 1:36 after intermission off assists from Nik Goff and Josh D’Alessio for the only marker of the period.

Mt. Hope (4-9-1) cut the lead to 2-1, 6:36 into the final period, when Jacob Calouro beat DeMarco on the power play as Nathan Cordeiro set up the senior forward with the man advantage. Co-captain Nate Morin reclaimed a two-goal lead for Ponaganset less than three minutes later on his sixth goal of the season with fellow co-captain Ethan Sederback and Nate Watts collecting helpers and, with three minutes left in regulation, Ryan Watts tallied his team-leading 18th goal of the year with twin brother Ryan Watts notching an assist for the final margin of victory.

DeMarco, who only faced four shots in one appearance in 2015-2016, captured the victory in his first high school start while Huskies net-minder, Kyle Depoy, turned aside 32 of 36 Chieftains shots on the cage.

With the victory, Ponaganset swept the three-game season series by outscoring Mt. Hope 11-1 with Ryan Watts beating Depoy three times.

The Chieftains return to Levy Arena Friday night to host second-place West Warwick/Exeter/West Greenwich at 7:30.
