Ponaganset continues as the only undefeated boys’ high school hockey team in Rhode Island at 13-0 after a 4-0 win over Mt. Hope.

(Warwick, RI) Curtis Briggs posted his fifth overall shutout of the season and Ryan Watts netted a pair of goals and added an assist to break open a defensive matchup as undefeated Ponaganset blanked Mt. Hope 4-0 in Rhode Island Division III hockey at Thayer Ice Arena.

Following a pair of scoreless periods that featured Briggs and Mt. Hope (4-8-1, 5-11-1 overall) goalie Kyle Depoy denying chance after chance, the Chieftains (13-0-0) broke through with 5:46 to play as co-captains Ethan Sederback and Nate Morin teamed for Sederback’s sixth goal of the season. Watts upped Ponaganset’s lead to 2-0 with 3:57 remaining in regulation off a Nick Ferrucci assist and notched a helper, along with Sederback, on freshman Jake Lincourt’s seventh tally of the campaign at the 12:51 mark. Following the Huskies pulling Depoy for an extra attacker, Watts caged an empty-net goal, with an assist for his twin brother, Nate Watts, for his team-leading 17th goal, only 56 seconds shy of the final horn.

Briggs registered his second consecutive shutout after swiping away 12 Mt. Hope attempts on goal while Depoy played a strong game until the late assault by Ponaganset, turning aside 20 of 24 Chieftains shots. Briggs, for his efforts, increased his save percentage to a stunning .951, which ranks, nationally, in the top-20.

After a few days of rest following a three-game week, Ponaganset will tackle another trio of games in succession:  a 7PM ET Thursday, February 25, matchup vs. Mt. Hope at Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink, a home game at Levy Arena vs. second-place West Warwick/Exeter/West Greenwich Co-op on Friday, February 26, at 7:30PM ET and a road tilt vs. winless East Providence at Cranston Ice Rink on Saturday, February 27, at 6:30PM ET.
