Curtis Briggs and Nate Watts lead Ponaganset to an 11-0 start with a 4-1 win over West Warwick/Exeter/West Greenwich.

(West Warwick, RI)  Nate Watts scored a pair of goals to support another strong outing from goaltender Curtis Briggs as Ponaganset remained undefeated with a 4-1 victory over West Warwick/Exeter/West Greenwich Co-op in Rhode Island Division III action at the West Warwick Civic Center.

While both teams showed defensive brilliance during the opening stanza, Watts teamed with Tom Caine for his eighth goal of his freshman campaign to give the Chieftains (11-0-0) an early 1-0 edge 8:23 into the contest.

The Wizards/Knights (8-3-0, 8-3-1) tied the contest at one, 8:10 into the second period, when Nick Pecchia slipped the puck past Briggs off assists from Alex Ventura and Zach Magiera, but Ponaganset regained the lead, 97 seconds later, as senior co-captain Nate Morin rifled his fifth goal of the season past WW/EWG net-minder Joseph Marfeo on the power-play with Ryan Watts picking up an assist. With 2:09 remaining before the second intermission, Ryan Watts beat Marfeo for an unassisted short-handed tally, his 14th goal, to up the visitors’ advantage to 3-1.

Nate Watts wasted little time in putting the game out of reach, early in the third period, with his ninth tally of the season at the 1:21 mark, providing the final margin of victory as the hard-hitting, brilliant matchup turned defensive, again, for the final 13-plus minutes of the evening.

Briggs turned aside 20 of 21 WW/EWG shots on net while Marfeo discarded 23 of 27 Chieftains attempts on the cage.

While Ryan Watts extended his point-scoring streak to 11 games, junior Josh D’Alessio’s streak was halted at ten. Briggs’ effort between the pipes inched his save percentage up to .941, one of the best in the state.

The Chieftains’ busy week continues Wednesday at 7PM ET as they host Warwick Vets at Adelard Arena in a rescheduled contest. WW/EWG will face winless East Providence Tuesday at 12:30PM ET at Cranston Ice Rink.
