Ponaganset stayed undefeated at 10-0, behind sophomore goalie Curtis Briggs, in a 4-1 win over Woonsocket/Scituate Co-op.

(Woonsocket, RI) – Curtis Briggs turned aside 20 of 21 shots and four different Chieftains found the back of the net as Ponaganset remained the lone undefeated and untied boys’ high school hockey team in the state with a 4-1 win over Woonsocket/Scituate Co-op at Adelard Arena.

Co-captain Nate Morin scored the opening period’s only goal, 4:30 into the contest, with an unassisted rip, his fourth of the season, past Woonsocket/Scituate goalie Nick Beals to give the Chieftains (10-0-0) a one-goal advantage.

Beals kept Woonsocket/Scituate (5-8-1, 6-8-1 overall) in the contest by denying shot after shot by the undefeated visitors, but freshman Matt Carlson upped Ponaganset’s lead to 2-0 with his third goal, unassisted, 8:30 into the second frame. 38 seconds later, junior Josh D’Alessio rifled home his 15th goal of the campaign, assisted by co-captain Ethan Sederback for a 3-0 Chieftains bulge.

17 seconds into the final stanza, Ponaganset’s points leader, freshman Ryan Watts, notched his 13th goal of the year, with his twin brother, Nate, garnering an assist for the final Ponaganset tally of the night, but Woonsocket/Scituate snapped Briggs’ attempt at his third complete game shutout, and fourth overall, when Kyle Archambault was able to sneak the puck past the Chieftains’ net-minder, with 3:04 to play, off an Anthony Jordao helper.

Despite the loss to the top offensive team in the state, Beals served his teammates well, denying 44 of 48 Ponaganset shots on net

D’Alessio and Ryan Watts, each, extended their scoring streaks to ten games while Carlson has tallied, at least, a point in five straight contests. Briggs improved his save percentage to a dandy .940, securing has position as one of the top goaltenders in Rhode Island high school hockey.

The Chieftains will take to the ice, three times, this week as two, recently, postponed games are rescheduled: a 1:30 PM ET matinee on Monday, February 15, vs. second place West Warwick/Exeter/West Greenwich Co-op at Benny Magiera Ice Rink in West Warwick and Wednesday, February 17 at 7PM ET vs. Warwick Vets at Adelard Arena, along with a Saturday, February 20 matchup vs. Mt. Hope at 8PM ET in Warwick at Thayer Ice Arena.

Woonsocket/Scituate will look to solidify a post-season berth when they face Warwick Vets at Pawtucket’s Dennis Lynch Arena Saturday night.
