(Burrillville, RI)  Ryan Watts registered his second hat trick of the season as part of a four-point evening to lead undefeated Ponaganset to a 6-3 victory over Warwick Vets in Rhode Island Division III hockey at venerable Levy Arena.

Watts, who celebrated his high school debut with a hat trick vs. Warwick Vets in the 2015-2016 lid-lifter, scored the lone goal of the opening period, 4:40 into the contest, with his 10th tally, while Josh D’Alessio and Matt Carlson picked up assists.

The Hurricanes (4-5) tied the game, 6:03 into the second period, as Noah Kane beat Ponaganset goaltender Curtis Briggs off assists from Collin Csoszor and Jacob Mitchell. Freshman Jake Lincourt put the host Chieftains (9-0) on top, for good, just over four minutes later with his sixth goal, assisted by Ryan Watts, and teamed with Brett Marceau to set up Nate Watts’ seventh goal and a 3-1 Ponaganset lead with 1:51 remaining before the second intermission. The home fans’ cheering had, barely, subsided when Ryan Watts drove home his second goal of the night, 39 seconds later, assisted by co-captain Nate Morin and Tom Caine as the hosts took a 4-1 lead to the break.

Patrons had just settled into their seats for the final 15 minutes when Warwick Vets trimmed their deficit to 4-2, as Greg Fontaine beat Briggs 55 seconds into the stanza with Brandon Major tallying an assist. Ryan Watts capped his hat trick, 7:24 into the period, courtesy of assists by Lincourt and Marceau, to restore Ponaganset’s three-goal lead at 5-2, but Fontaine teamed with Tyler Scotti for his second goal of the night to keep the Hurricanes within striking distance, at 5-3, with 4:30 left on the regulation clock. That would be as close as the visitors would get, as D’Alessio closed the scoring 78 seconds later with an unassisted goal, his team-leading 14th of the season.

Briggs stopped 27 of 30 Warwick Vets shots while his counterpart, Josh Belleville, turned 22 of 28 Chieftains shots aside.

D’Alessio and Ryan Watts extended their point-scoring streaks to nine games, each, while Lincourt has tallied, at least, a point in eight of the Chieftains’ nine games as Ponaganset remains the lone unbeaten team in Rhode Island high school hockey.

The Chieftains return to action Friday, February 5 in a 9PM ET road tilt at the West Warwick Civic Center to face West Warwick/Exeter/West Greenwich, who took a surprising 4-3 loss to Scituate/Woonsocket Co-op on Saturday night. Ponaganset won the first season meeting between the clubs, 3-2 at Levy Arena, as Morin, D’Alessio and Ryan Watts scored goals to support Briggs’ outstanding evening in net, as the sophomore keeper denied 30 of 32 attempts.

Warwick Vets will take to their home ice at Thayer Ice Arena on Wednesday, February 3 to host Johnston/North Providence Co-op.
