December 12, 2015

PHS logo(Burrillville, RI)  Nate Morin tallied a goal and an assist while Curtis Briggs stopped 30 of 32 shots to lead Ponaganset to a 3-2 victory over West Warwick/Exeter/West Greenwich Co-op in a highly anticipated early-season matchup of Rhode Island Division-3 hockey powers.

Josh D’Alessio opened the scoring for the (3-0) Chieftains, as his third goal of the season beat Jared Olson for a 1-0 lead 6:17 into the opening period, assisted by co-captains Morin and Ethan Sederback. Less than three minutes later, Morin increased the advantage to 2-0 with an unassisted tally, his second goal of the campaign. The (0-1) Wizards lit the lamp with 3:54 to play in the first period as Nick Pecchia scored his first goal of 2015-2016, on an assist from Frank Azzerello, to cut Ponaganset’s lead to 2-1.

Freshman Ryan Watts scored, what would prove to be, the game-winning goal with 4:51 elapsed in the second period, his fourth marker of the season, assisted by his brother, Nate. Both teams’ defenses held strong through the rest of the period and the first half of the third stanza until Zach Magiera tallied the final goal of the contest with 7:19 remaining in regulation, his first of the season, courtesy of an Alex Ventura assist.

Briggs, a sophomore, remains undefeated at 3-0 in the cage for the Chieftains and improved his save percentage to .932 while Olsen stopped 34 of 37 Ponaganset shots in his squad’s season opener. Despite being held to three goals, Ponaganset, one of the state’s highest-scoring teams in 2014-2015, still boasts a 24-4 advantage in goal differential through their first three games.

The Chieftains return to action on Friday December 18 at 6PM ET when they host Scituate/Woonsocket Co-op at Levy Arena. The Wizards will take to the ice for the second time in 2015-2016 tonight, Saturday December 12, to host Warwick Vets at West Warwick’s Benny Magiera Ice Rink in a scheduled 9PM ET tilt.
