As NCAA Division-1 Baseball has pared its tournament to its version of the “Sweet 16”, LSU remains the standard-bearer following regional play. While the Tigers were one of seven national seeds to advance to the Super Regionals round, a recent College World Series champion’s season ended, surprisingly, on its home field. UCLA, the 2013 champion, had to work its way through the loser’s bracket to reach the Regional title game, but fell to Maryland 2-1 on Monday night to give the Terrapins the Los Angeles Regional title.

Florida, Missouri State, Illinois and Louisville, like LSU, swept their regionals with ease, but that wasn’t the case for the two remaining national seeds. Due to a venue scheduling conflict, Missouri State, despite being a national seed and winning the Springfield Regional, will face Arkansas in Fayetteville at Baum Stadium

Miami-Florida received an unexpected test from Columbia as the Lions blanked the Hurricanes 3-0 on Sunday night., handing Jim Morris’ club its first shutout loss of 2015. Visions of a Super Regional berth for the Ancient 8 tourney participant evaporated early on Monday as Miami took the Coral Gables Regional hardware with a 21-3 victory.

Texas Christian rebounded from an early loss to capture the Fort Worth Regional in exciting fashion. After an easy win over Sacred Heart, the Horned Frogs fell, 5-4, to North Carolina State dropping Jim Schlossnagle’s team into the loser’s bracket. A win over Stony Brook, a 2012 CWS participant, earned TCU a rematch with the Wolfpack on Sunday, which they won, easily, setting up a winner-take-all Monday evening matchup which will be talked about by Horned Frogs fans for years.

Trailing NC State 8-1 after seven and a half innings,, TCU scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth, one in the ninth to send the contest to extra innings and won the game on a 10th inning, pinch-hit RBI single from sophomore Elliott Barzilli.

Other host teams advancing to the Super Regionals include Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, Florida State and Cal State Fullerton. Five teams continue their season for, at least, another week after winning regionals on the road.

Virginia and Arkansas, a pair of 2-seeds, won the Lake Elsinore and Stillwater Regionals, respectively. 3-seeds Maryland and Louisiana-Lafayette captured, respectively, the Los Angeles and Houston Regionals while Virginia Commonwealth, 82nd in the RPI rankings outlasted the competition in the Dallas Regional as a 4-seed.
