The “One vs. Two” matchup at Alex Box Stadium did not disappoint the college baseball world as top-ranked LSU took two of three from second-ranked Texas A&M. After a walk-off win Thursday night for the host Tigers, Paul Mainieri’s club battered the Aggies’ bullpen in Game 2, but the visitors captured the series finale to keep the squads ranked as they were last weekend.

The rest of the top-ten remained, basically, the same as last weekend. UCLA took two of three at Stanford to cap a 3-1 week to remain third. Louisville shrugged off a mid-week loss to Western Kentucky to handle Bethune-Cookman for a 4-1 campaign and fifth-ranked Texas Christian manhandled Texas en route to a 4-0 week to keep their national seed hopes alive.

Despite losing their series vs. surging Kentucky, Florida holds on to the sixth position. UC Santa Barbara won their road series at Hawai’i to stay seventh, Arizona State had a 3-1 week, including a series win vs. visiting Tennessee Tech and remains eighth while Illinois pushed their winning streak to 17 games with a weekend sweep of Penn State and a mid-week romp over Eastern Illinois to keep firm in ninth.

The only change in the top-ten this week is Vanderbilt, after the Commodores shrugged off consecutive sub-par weekends to easily dispatch Missouri at Hawkins Field.

After taking two of three at Mark Light Field, Florida State jumps three spots to 11th while Miami dropped one notch to 14th. Through no fault of their own, Florida Atlantic and Dallas Baptist dropped two spots each to 12th and 13th, respectively, following the impressive weekend displays by Vanderbilt and Florida State.

Three teams return to the rankings: North Carolina (22nd), Coastal Carolina (24th) and Houston (25th) while UNC Wilmington (21st), Nevada (22nd) and Missouri (25th) fall into the “also receiving consideration” category.

As noted in last week’s report, the battle for supremacy in the Ivy League’s Gehrig Division lived up to its billing. Columbia and Pennsylvania split a Saturday doubleheader at the Lions’ Robertson Field at Satow Stadium in New York City. On Sunday, the venue switched to the Quakers’ Meiklejohn Stadium in Philadelphia with the hosts winning the lid-lifter, 2-0. The night-cap went to extra innings tied at 6. In the top of the tenth, an RBI double from Logan Boyher and a run-scoring single from Jordan Serena gave Columbia an 8-6 lead, which they would not relinquish. The two teams will face each other in a one-game playoff, this week, at a time and site to be determined, to crown the Gehrig Division winner – who will face Dartmouth next weekend for the Ivy League Championship and an automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.

Weekend series to watch this weekend include #8 Arizona State at California as the Sun Devils try to build their resumé as a national seed while the Golden Bears attempt to keep their post-season hopes alive. Clemson looks for a late-season turnaround as they welcome #4 Louisville to Doug Kingsmore Stadium, #9 Illinois travels to Columbus to face #18 Ohio State at Bill Davis Stadium and #10 Vanderbilt travels to Cliff Hagan Stadium to battle SEC foe Kentucky.

Meanwhile, #11 Florida State hosts #24 Coastal Carolina in an inter-sectional matchup at Dick Howser Stadium, #20 Oklahoma State faces Oklahoma at Tulsa’s ONEOK Field before heading to Oklahoma City for a pair of contests at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark and #25 Houston looks to separate itself from the logjam atop the AAC as they travel to Greer Field/Turchin Stadium to battle Tulane.
