(Burrillville, RI)  Tyler Petrella and Curtis Briggs combined to stop 28 of 29 shots while Ethan Sederback and Nate Morin scored first-period goals as Ponaganset opened their Division III semifinal series with a 2-1 victory over Johnston/North Providence Co-op Friday night at Levy Arena.

The Chieftains (17-2) took a 1-0 lead 5:10 into the game on Sederback’s 14th goal of the season with assists credited to Morin and Tom Caine. Morin added a power play goal, his 28th tally of the campaign, with 59 seconds remaining in the opening period, assisted by Caine and co-captain James Manni.

While both teams had numerous opportunities, neither squad lit the lamp in the second period.

The Panthers were able to cut their deficit to 2-1 in the final period as North Providence senior Nick Threshier beat Briggs off an assist by Johnston’s Sam DaCosta with 5:33 remaining in regulation. With just less than a minute to play, Johnston/North Providence pulled their goaltender, David Kelly, for an extra attacker, but Ponaganset was able to keep the puck out of the net for the victory.

Petrella stopped all 13 shots he faced while Briggs turned aside 15 of 16 attempts on goal. Kelly, despite allowing the two first-period goals, made 19 saves on the evening.

The two teams will meet today at 5:30 PM  in Game 2 of the best-of-three series at the Rhode Island Sports Center in North Smithfield, RI
