(Burrillville, RI)  Nate Morin registered his fifth hat trick of the season and Ethan Sederback added a goal and two assists to back Curtis Briggs’ perfect night in net as Ponaganset blanked Warwick Vets 5-0 Saturday night in Rhode Island Division III action at Levy Arena.

The (11-0) Chieftains continued their hot start out of the gate as Morin gave the hosts all the offense they needed with his hat trick before nine minutes elapsed in the game. The sophomore tallied his first goal only 1:37 into the contest with assists logged by Tom Caine and Josh D’Alessio. Just over six minutes later, Caine and Sederback set up Morin on the power play for a 2-0 lead and, with 6:09 to play in the opening 15 minutes, the state’s top scorer added his 21st goal of the campaign, assisted by Sederback and D’Alessio. At the 11:37 mark, Ponaganset’s co-captains teamed to up the lead to 4-0 as Derek Merchant scored his 15th marker of the season off a James Manni assist.

The final two periods featured hard-hitting and power play opportunities for both teams, but neither the Chieftains nor the Hurricanes could score on their man-advantages. After more than 33 scoreless minutes following Merchant’s tally, Ponaganset lit the lamps for the final time with 19 seconds to play as Sederback scored his 11th goal on Brett Marceau’s helper.

Briggs turned away all 23 Warwick Vets shots on net for the Chieftains’ sixth shutout of 2014-2015 while Nick McGhie overcame a rough start to stop 27 of Ponaganset’s 32 shots for the Hurricanes.

Due to a quirk in the league schedule, Ponaganset’s next game will be on Friday, February 6 vs. Woonsocket at Adelard Arena. Warwick Vets will travel to Smithfield Municipal Rink next Friday night to face Mt. Hope.

Chieftains Game Notes:

Morin extended his consecutive games streak with a goal to seven while Merchant and Sederback have scored a goal in nine of the Chieftains’ 11 games.

D’Alessio has tallied, at least, two points in four of his past five games and Manni has found the scoring sheet in nine games this season.

Caine’s ten assists trail team leaders Morin and D’Alessio by two.

Briggs, a freshman, along with senior Tyler Petrella, have combined for a 0.82 GAA, which ranks first, overall, in Rhode Island, and second in league play (behind Division-I Cumberland at 0.78).

The Chieftains lead the state in goals scored (78) and goal differential (69) while ranking second in goals scored per game (7.1) behind West Warwick/Exeter/West Greenwich, which blisters the nets at 8.6 GPG.
