Ponaganset 11 Scituate 1

January 6, 2015

(West Warwick, RI) — Nathan Morin tallied a hat trick and a pair of assists and Josh D’Alessio scored twice and notched two helpers as Ponaganset High School remained undefeated with a 11-1 victory over Scituate High School at the West Warwick Civic Center.

The Rhode Island Division III-leading Chieftains, at 8-0, struck first 5:22 into the opening stanza on co-captain James Manni’s ninth goal of the season, assisted by Sean Tennille. Ethan Sederback extended the lead to 2-0 with his ninth tally of the season, just over two minutes later, on D’Alessio’s first assist of the night.

Scituate cut the lead to 2-1 at the 9:42 mark when Lucas Mancinelli found the back of the net, assisted by Matthew Besser, but Ponaganset hiked the lead to 3-1 less than 90 seconds later as co-captain Derek Merchant scored his tenth goal of the campaign off a Tom Caine assist.

Morin opened the second period scoring with his 12th goal, unassisted, 2:58 into the frame and assisted on D’Alessio’s sixth tally of the season only 24 seconds later. Manni extended the lead to 6-1 with his second goal of the night and tenth of the season a mere 12 seconds later off a D’Alessio assist. Morin notched his second goal of the period at 6:20, assisted by Sederback, and D’Alessio capped his four-point night with his second goal of the game at 10:13 of the period, with Morin adding another assist to give the Chieftains an 8-1 advantage.

Nick Ferrucci got into the scoring column with his second goal of 2014-15, assisted by John Cavanagh and Tennille, 3:07 into the final period. 53 seconds later, Mike Dutka picked up his second goal of the season with Elijah Wiggill adding an assist and Morin sent the game’s final goal flying home four minutes later, giving the junior forward his 14th goal and third hat trick of the season.

Tyler Petrella was superb, again, between the pipes for the Chieftains as the senior net-minder stopped 16 of 17 Scituate shots on goal.

Ponaganset returns to the West Warwick Civic Center Friday night at 7:00 for a highly anticipated matchup with (7-0) West Warwick/Exeter/West Greenwich Co-op. The Chieftains have outscored their opponents 59-5 through eight games while the senior-laden Wizards hold a 65-8 goal advantage through their seven contests.

Meanwhile, Scituate will head to Thayer Arena for a Saturday night battle with Warwick Veterans at 6:30.
