2014 Week 12 FCS Top-25 Rankings (11/10-11/16)

November 9, 2014

Coastal Carolina takes over the top spot in this week’s Top-25 rankings after their resounding 59-34 road win over Charlotte on Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium. Junior quarterback Alex Ross tied his own single-game school record of 426 yards of total offense, including a career-high of 370 through the air, and rushed for a pair of touchdowns. Wide receiver Bruce Mapp (pictured left) collected a game-high 118 yards on six receptions as the Chanticleers became the first Big South Conference school to begin a season 10-0.

Meanwhile, North Dakota State had its 33-game winning streak snapped in Cedar Falls, IA at the hands of #17 Northern Iowa, 23-3. The three-time defending national champions also saw their 18-game Missouri Valley Football Conference winning streak end with a thud as the Panthers held the Bison to 175 yards of total offense and forced a pair of turnovers.

Elsewhere in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, #15 Illinois State defeated #14 Youngstown State 35-21 to pull into a tie atop the conference with North Dakota State. Following last week’s second-half collapse vs. the Bison, #24 South Dakota State made a case for a playoff spot with a 32-17 win over #16 Indiana State in Terre Haute.

#3 New Hampshire continued to pace the CAA after handling winless Rhode Island 41-14 in Kingston, RI. The Wildcats moved up to #2 in the nation on the strength of Sean Goldrich’s arm, as the junior passed for 330 yards and a pair of touchdowns. #6 Villanova rebounded from last week’s loss at Richmond with a 42-14 pasting of Towson. Meanwhile, the #7 Spiders suffered a huge loss – falling 33-20 at Maine in a game that was not as close as the score indicates. #25 James Madison rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit at Stony Brook to defeat the Seawolves 27-24.

Out in Big Sky country, #4 Eastern Washington welcomed quarterback and Payton Award candidate Vernon Adams, Jr. back to action, and he did not disappoint the Cheney, WA faithful. The junior gunslinger passed for 410 yards and four touchdowns in a 36-26 win over #8 Montana to retain a half-game lead in the conference. #12 Montana State survived a stern test from upset-minded Portland State, #22 Northern Arizona barely defeated UC Davis and #23 Cal Poly lost at Idaho State, who cracks the top-25 for the first time in recent memory.

#5 Jacksonville State kept alive its hopes of a first round playoff bye with a hard-nosed 20-6 victory at #13 Eastern Kentucky and remained undefeated in the Ohio Valley Conference. #10 Chattanooga stayed unbeaten in the Southern Conference with a 31-13 victory over Wofford. The showdown of Patriot League undefeated teams went to overtime as #11 Fordham won at Bucknell 30-27. #18 Southeastern Louisiana pummeled conference foe Houston Baptist 76-7 to stay tied atop the Southland standings. #19 Liberty scored ten unanswered points in the fourth quarter to get past Monmouth 34-24 and remain undefeated in the Big South Conference – two weeks ahead of their annual battle with top-ranked Coastal Carolina. Connor Sheehan returned two interceptions for touchdowns as #20 Harvard blanked Columbia 45-0 and Northeast Conference leader #21 Bryant escaped the Steel City with a 20-17 victory at Duquesne.
